Dennis R. Baldwin is of counsel at Mackenzie Hughes and has been with
the firm since 1965. He served on the firm's Executive Committee from
the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s. Dennis primarily counsels clients
on municipal law and finance and over the years has devoted much of his
time to the "right to build" field, obtaining zoning and related
approvals for a variety of residential and commercial construction projects
for such clients as Wegmans Food Markets, the Wilmorite Companies, Cazenovia
College, Ruby Tuesday and Fastrac Markets. He also counsels several municipal
clients including the Fayetteville-Manlius Central School District, the
Town of VanBuren and the Village of Manlius, where he served as its Village
Attorney for many years. In addition, Dennis devotes substantial time
to the needs of individuals and families, including such matters as buying,
leasing and selling real property, drafting wills and assisting in the
planning and administration of estates.
He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1961 from Hamilton
College and his Juris Doctorate in 1965 from the University of
Chicago Law School. Dennis was admitted to the New York Bar in
1965 and to the U.S. District Court, Northern District of New
York, in 1966. From 1961 to 1962 he studied on a Rotary International
Fellowship at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon.
He is an active member of the following Bar Associations: Onondaga County
(president, 1986 and recipient of its 2004 Distinguished Lawyer Award),
New York State (vice president, Fifth Judicial District and member, Executive
Committee, 1994-2000; member, Municipal Law, General Practice and Real
Property Law Sections; chair, Committee on Membership) and American (member,
Section of State and Local Government Law and Senior Lawyer Division;
recipient of the latters 2007 Pro Bono Award). In addition, he has served
as president of the Onondaga County Bar Foundation and the Onondaga County
Bar Association Assigned Counsel Program, Inc.
In the community, Dennis is active in the Frank H. Hiscock Legal Aid
Society (president, 1991-1993 and director), Rotary Club of Syracuse (president,
1977-1978 and 1988 recipient of its Community Service Award), ESF College
Foundation (emeritus director and past member of its Executive Committee),
Everson Museum of Art (former board member, trustee and secretary), Fayetteville-Manlius
Education Foundation (president, 1995-1996), Interfaith Works of CNY (president-Elect)
and United Church of Fayetteville (past moderator).
Dennis spends his free time enjoying family and friends, boating,
reading, traveling and photography.
